Mojeek Tips Support Page

This page contains a selection of different tips that you can use in order to improve your Mojeek experience. It covers changes to settings as well as methods of searching, and will be updated along with changes to Mojeek and how it works.

Before Searching

Location

Mojeek automatically detects your country-level location in order to apply a regional boost to websites which are more likely to be relevant to you due to where you’re searching from. In cases where you believe you’d be better suited by setting a manual location, such as when you’re using a VPN or are on holiday, you can do so in Preferences, Location & Language, Set Location.

Language

Mojeek has two different language options. The Site Language option changes the language presented across the entire Mojeek website, such as that of descriptions and links. The Search Results option sets the preferred language for search results, adding a boost to pages which carry this language.

Safe Search

Safe Search allows you to hide results which Mojeek has identified as being for a mature audience. You can turn it on in Preferences or through the gear icon under the search box.

The Open in New Tab option allows you to load pages from results in new browser tabs, rather than the current open tab. This can be useful, as you can open more than one webpage and compare them quickly and easily without having to return to the Search Engine Results Page.

Results per Page

The Results per Page setting lets you amend the number of links which are offered up to you once searching on Mojeek. By default this is set to 10, but if you prefer to be able to see a considerable number more results before having to paginate, you can set this to 20, 30, or 40.

Summary

Mojeek’s Summary Infobox and tab pull together a quick summary of the results returned for a query, with citations which allow you to identify what you’re looking for and click through to it.

Infobox

The Infobox presents a relevant page from Wikipedia which has been matched to your query; if you regularly visit Wikipedia for information then this could be useful in streamlining your journey there.

News

This presents results from the Mojeek News search on the right-hand side of the Search Engine Results Page. You can have up to 10 News results displayed, and by setting this to 0 you can get rid of them completely.

Operators

Finally, Mojeek’s Operators offer you the ability to undertake actions such as time-gating searches and restricting them to specific websites through the addition of a few extra characters in your query. There is a Guide to Mojeek Operators which may be of use.

When Searching

Eliminating Unnecessary Words

Mojeek predominantly uses lexical matching, meaning that the words which are used in the query are matched explicitly to the text on the page; words such as who, where, what can often be unnecessary signals which prevent the return of higher-quality results.

Take for example:

Mojeek here is matching “who” “king” “sweden”. It is unlikely that “who” is going to add much providing quality pages exist as quality information is rarely phrased in questions. When in doubt, less is more.

Remember Spellcheck

Unlike other search engines such as Google, Mojeek does not autocorrect misspelt queries. There will be a link which appears under the search box with a Did you mean: link for possible misspellings. Clicking on this will redo your search but with the correct spelling.

Remember Clustering

By default Mojeek clusters results. This means that you will only get one result from mojeek.com on the Search Engine Results Page (subdomains will also appear as their own results), with a link underneath which reads See more results from www.mojeek.com » if there are other pages which match your query. In order to see these other pages you must click this link, which will take you to a site: search of mojeek.com using that query.

Focus for Answers

Mojeek Focus is a tool which allows you to build a list of sites to search across when using Mojeek; you can enable it by toggling settings in your Focus Dashboard. There are a few pre-built templates that you can find in the Template Library which may assist you in things such as dictionary definitions and weather searches.

After Searching

If Something is Missing or Off

If you are unable to find a website that you believe should be returned by Mojeek, or there is something else that is not quite working how you’d expect, then please contact us. User feedback is invaluable for our process of continuous improvement.

Keeping Updated

The Mojeek Newsletter is a useful communication, normally sent out about once every two months (sometimes more frequently) which will ensure that you’re one of the first to find out about Mojeek developments, such as changes to this page.
